Powers & Santola was so knowledgeable and caring. I was so very fortunate to find such a great law firm.
Recalls of defective cars and trucks because of faulty parts or designs sometimes make big, national news. Unfortunately, news about dangerous automotive defects rarely results from a manufacturer stepping forward. Public awareness of an automotive defect almost always comes from someone being injured or killed in a car crash, often followed by a product liability lawsuit.
If you or a loved one has been seriously injured in a car or truck accident in New York, and you believe an automotive defect may have played a role, you could be entitled to compensation.
The product liability lawyers at Powers & Santola, LLP, can help you pursue full and fair compensation for your medical expenses, property loss, income loss, pain and suffering and other losses.

Recalls for Dangerous Automotive
Defects Are Common
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) says since the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act was enacted in 1966 the government has recalled:
- More than 390 million cars, trucks, motorcycles, mopeds, recreational vehicles (RVs) and buses.
- 66 million motor vehicle parts.
- 46 million tires.
- 42 million child safety seats.
NHTSA recalls of defective automotive parts and systems have included:
- Accelerators that stick or fail.
- Air bags that fail to inflate properly or deploy when they shouldn’t.
- Child safety seats with faulty buckles or belts.
- Engine cooling fans with blades that have broken unexpectedly.
- Fuel systems that leak fuel, creating a fire hazard.
- Seats and seat backs that fail during proper use.
- SUVs, vans and trucks with design defects that make them unusually prone to rollover accidents.
- Steering components that fail, causing loss of vehicle control.
- Tires prone to tread separations or other defects that lead to deflation or blowouts and loss of vehicle control.
- Wheels that crack or break, resulting in loss of vehicle control.
- Windshield wiper assemblies that fail.
- Wiring system failures that cause loss of lighting or vehicle fires.
Investigating Car Accidents
for Evidence of Auto Defects
Car manufacturers, automotive component suppliers and car and truck distributors and dealers have a legal duty to ensure that the products they sell to the public are safe when used as intended. If they fail to meet this obligation, and drivers, passengers or others are harmed because of a defect, they may be held legally liable.
A manufacturer, distributor or other responsible party may be ordered to pay damages (compensation) if a defective automotive product harms the product’s users or others.
Developing a product liability lawsuit is a complex undertaking, but an experienced attorney has the knowledge and resources necessary for success.
In upstate New York, the lawyers of Powers & Santola, LLP, have successfully pursued product liability cases, including for automotive defects, since 1987.
We have the resources to conduct a thorough investigation of your car accident to determine whether an automotive defect was a factor. If evidence shows that a manufacturer, distributor, retailer and/or another party was responsible for a product’s failure, we are ready to work hard to hold all responsible parties liable and see to it that you obtain the maximum amount of compensation the law allows.
You May Be Able to Sue
Multiple Parties
If your accident was caused by another driver’s negligence or reckless driving, we may be able to bring a successful personal injury claim against the other driver. That does not mean you cannot also seek compensation for further injuries resulting from a failed seat belt, a faulty air bag or a dangerous car seat, for example.
You may need multiple sources of financial recovery if your injuries or your child’s injuries are severe.
At Powers & Santola, LLP, we look for every possible source of financial recovery for our clients. Serious injuries bring a lifetime of costs that can be a tremendous burden to families. Full compensation can mean the difference between good medical care and stress and hardship. We work to ensure you get the recovery you need.
